Declare State Of Emergency In Southern Kaduna- Human Rights Tells Jonathan

A human rights group, Centre for Development and Rights Advocacy, CEDRA, Thursday appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to equally declare a state of emergency in southern part of Kaduna State as he has done in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States.

According to the group, the call for emergency became imperative in view of the ceaseless killing of defenceless villagers in Southern part of Kaduna by Fulani herdsmen.

Court sentences Man to Death for Fatally Stabbing Neigbour

A High Court sitting in Abudu in the Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo on Thursday sentenced one Sunday Ilawe to death by hanging for stabbing his neighbour, Blessing Ehigie, to death.


Ilawe who stabbed Ehigie with a knife on Oct. 13, 2004 at Egua-Evbu Village had earlier pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of murder.

Jonathan Secures Release of Nigerian Prisoners In Equitorial Guinea

President Goodluck Jonathan has secured the release of 10 prisoners held byEquatorial Guinea for various immigration offences, a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

It said the release of the prisoners was the outcome of the two-day official visit by Mr. Jonathan to the country between March 21 and 22.

“The host Minister of National Security disclosed that such a gesture had never been officially extended to any illegal immigrant in Equatorial Guinea from any country.

Arms, Bodies Recovered In Nasarawa State.

The Nasarawa State Government yesterday said it has recovered some arms and ammunition from the Ombatse militia group.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hajiya Zainab Abdulmumini, said some bodies have been recovered and handed over to the victim’s families. But the statement did not give any figure.

It also said some have been recovered and handed over to the police.

Army begins Offensive Against Boko Haram

The Nigeria Army has begun an offensive against Boko Haram Islamists, raiding camps in a remote northeastern park, while more than 2,000 troops have beendeployed to retake territory seized by theinsurgents, a military source told AFP Thursday. “Our men raided some terrorist camps inthe Sambisa Game Reserve,” in Borno state, said the senior officer who requested anonymity. “So far 2,000 troops have been deployed to Borno,” headded, declining to comment on the forces sent to the other affected states of Yobe and Adamawa

Gunmen, believed to be members of the extremist Boko Haram sect, on Tuesday evening shot dead the Borno Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. Faye Pama Musa was killed inside his Maiduguri residence less than an hour after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States. General Assembly is expected to approve Wednesday an Arab-backed resolution calling for a political transition in Syria and strongly condemning President Bashar Assad's regime for its escalating use of heavy weapons, U.N. diplomats said. Pirates Attack Passenger Boats in Bayelsa

Armed pirates, during the weekend, reportedly terrorized passenger boats on the Nembe Creek in the Bayelsa East senatorial district, dispossessing them of their cash and belongings. The attack, it was learnt, occurred along the Sabatoru-Igweta-Iwoama-Nembe route between 4pm and 5pm. No fewer than 10 passenger boats were raided by the hoodlums who carted away some of the engines leaving their victims stranded. The Nembe-Brass waterways in the East senatorial district, it was learnt, had become vulnerable to pirate attacks, which had worsened the plight of commuters to the coastal enclave. Though no live was lost in the incident, itwas gathered that the victims who sailedfrom the Ogbia jetty were travelling to Nembe for a burial ceremony when they were attacked some nautical miles from their destination. A message from the Nigerian High Commission in Nairobi warned the Nigerian Football Federation of an impending hostile reception by their hosts and that they should do everythingto ensure the Super Eagles are psychologically prepared for what they would meet in Nairobi. At a time the Boko Haram insurgency became aggressive and crippling, all that President Goodluck Jonathan had said to the Nigerian people, at least to pacify them was that the act of terrorism had become a global threat and that it was probably the turn of Nigeria to have a dose of the bitter pills of terrorism.

His position, quite expectedly, elicited anger and rage of the people as it was not only unpresidential but an indication of a government that was both helpless and clueless. A few years down the line, the Nigerian government, still under the leadership of Jonathan, has yet found a way round the menace of Boko Haram and other sister terrorist groups that have made the Northern Nigeria their safe abode.

Jonathan, Service Chiefs Meets On Amnesty Committee Report

Barely 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan met with traditional rulers from the north on the possibility of granting amnesty to members of the Boko Haram sect, another meeting between him and the service chiefs was held Tuesday to consider the report of the Amnesty Security Committee set up two weeks ago.

The committee, which was set up by Jonathan following the agitation by northern leaders, who had met with him on the precarious security situation in the region, was mandated to consider the feasibility of granting pardon to Boko Haram adherents, among other terms of reference.

Dangote To Build $8bn Refinery In Nigeria

Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, plans to invest up to $8bn to build a Nigerian oil refinery with a capacity of around 400,000 barrels a day by late 2016, the tycoon told Reuters on Tuesday.

This will almost double Nigeria’s current refining capacity.

“This will really help not only Nigeria but sub-Saharan Africa. There has not been a new refinery for a long time in sub-Saharan Africa,” Dangote said in a telephone interview

Keshi Must Return To Nigeria If He Likes His Job-NFF

Emeka Inyama, a board member of the Nigeria Football Federation, has stated that Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, has travelled to the US without permission and must return from his California base by Monday.

The former Mali and Togo boss left the country and failed to attend the meeting of the technicak committee and the NFF have asked him to return and answer a query.

4 Policemen Face Murder Charge For Allegedly Killing Two Persons

Four police officers have been arraigned before a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for allegedly killing two bus passengers.

They also allegedly shot another person in the foot.

The officers were said to have committed the act during a failed attempt to extort N50 from a bus driver.

The suspects, ASP Omorogbe, Inspector Emmason Udo, Hadiza Musa and Samirah Ileya of the Abacha Road Police Station, Obia/Akpor locality of Port Harcourt were alleged to have shot the victims sometimes in 2010 while the driver of the commercial bus in which the victims were riding attempted to escape from the policemen who demanded N50 from him at a check point

Three Arrested Over Murder Of 12 Policemen In Bayelsa State

Following the killing of 12 policemen by aggrieved militants in the creeks and waterways of Bayelsa State, the police in conjunction with operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Wednesday arrested three members of the group who allegedly carried out the killing.

The policemen, who were among a 50-man contingent deployed in Azuzama to provide security at the   burial of the mother of a repentant Niger Delta warlord, Kile Selky Torughedi, alias General Young Shall Grow, were killed in an ambush in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

MEND Threatens To Resume Attacks On Friday

The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta on Wednesday announced that it would on Friday (tomorrow) resume hostilities in the country.

In an e-mail sent to journalists, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, MEND’s spokesman, Gbomo Jomo, said a series of attacks, codenamed Hurricane Exodus, would begin at midnight on Friday.

It said the attacks would be “a direct repercussion of a forged threat letter contrived by the Nigerian and South African governments purporting to have originated from MEND”

Former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, slammed President Goodluck Jonathan, describing the virulent sect, Boko Haram, as a creation of the present administration.
President Jonathan, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe had on Tuesday challenged General Buhari to persuade members of the sect to accept dialogue as a means of ending the orgy of violence in the North.
