Air Nigeria Suspends Operation, Sacks Workers
After a string of problems that hampered its operations, Nigeria flag carrier Air Nigeria has announced the suspension of its local, regional and international operations with effect from 10 Sept. 2012. The airline's management said in a statement Tuesday that the action resulted from staff disloyalty and weak business environment which are not conducive for business in the aviation sector.
According to the statement, Air Nigeria Chairman
Jimoh Ibrahim said about 50 loyal members of staff
from various departments of the airline had been
selected with a mandate to recommence business
within 12 months, while the others had been sacked
effective from the last day of work on their various
routes.
It was the latest snag to hit the operations of the
airline, an offshoot of former Virgin Nigeria that
started operations in June 2005.
The regulatory Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority
(NCAA) had earlier this year suspended the
operations of the airline, after its pilots embarked
on a strike.
But it resumed operations after the NCAA lifted the
suspension.
After operating for sometime, Air Nigeria
announced it was suspending its local and regional
flights, after NCAA accused it of being in financial
distress.
